We treat common skin concerns in children and teens including eczema, acne, molluscum, warts, fungal rashes, and routine irritations.
Rare or complex cases may be referred to pediatric dermatology when needed.
Surgical Dermatology
We evaluate and treat a variety of benign, precancerous, and cancerous skin growths using procedures selected according to the diagnosis, location, and individual needs of each patient. Services may include skin biopsies, removal of benign or atypical growths, excisions, incision and drainage of cysts or abscesses, electrosurgery, curettage, and destruction of selected superficial skin cancers. When specialized treatment such as Mohs surgery is indicated, appropriate referral and coordinated care can be arranged.
Skin Biopsies
A skin biopsy removes a small sample of tissue for examination by a dermatopathology laboratory. Depending on the lesion, the procedure may involve a shave biopsy, punch biopsy, or excisional biopsy. Biopsies help establish an accurate diagnosis and guide any additional treatment that may be needed.
Cryosurgery
Cryosurgery uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy targeted tissue. It is commonly used for actinic keratoses, warts, seborrheic keratoses, and other selected superficial lesions. Temporary redness, blistering, crusting, or changes in skin pigmentation may occur during healing.
Removal of Benign Growths
Selected skin tags, irritated seborrheic keratoses, cysts, and other noncancerous growths may be treated using excision, shave removal, cryosurgery, electrosurgery, or another appropriate technique. Cosmetic removal of benign lesions may not be covered by health insurance.
Surgical Excision
Excision removes an entire lesion along with an appropriate margin of surrounding skin. It may be recommended for certain atypical moles, cysts, benign growths, and selected skin cancers. The area is numbed with local anesthesia, and the resulting opening is generally closed with sutures. Removed tissue may be submitted for laboratory examination.
Curettage and Electrosurgery
Curettage uses a specialized instrument to gently scrape away abnormal tissue. Electrosurgery may then be used to control bleeding and treat remaining abnormal or cancer cells. This technique may be appropriate for certain benign lesions, precancerous growths, and selected superficial skin cancers.
Shave Removal
A shave procedure removes a raised lesion at or slightly below the surface of the skin. It may be suitable for selected benign growths or lesions requiring diagnosis. Whether a shave removal is appropriate depends on the type, depth, and location of the lesion.
Incision and Drainage
Painful or inflamed cysts and skin abscesses may require a small opening to release accumulated material and relieve pressure. Depending on the condition, additional treatment—such as medication, culture testing, injection, wound care, or later surgical removal—may also be recommended.
Excision of Skin Cancers and Dysplastic Nevi
Standard surgical excision may be recommended for certain basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, melanomas, and dysplastic—or atypical—nevi. During the procedure, the area is numbed with local anesthesia, and the lesion is removed along with a clinically appropriate margin of surrounding skin. The specimen is sent to a dermatopathology laboratory to confirm the diagnosis and determine whether the margins are clear.
The surgical opening is usually repaired with sutures, although the method of closure depends on its size and location. Patients receive individualized wound-care instructions, activity restrictions, and a follow-up appointment for evaluation and, when necessary, suture removal.
Not every dysplastic nevus requires additional surgery. The need for excision or re-excision depends on the degree of atypia, whether the biopsy margins are involved, the lesion’s clinical appearance, and the patient’s individual risk factors.
If pathology indicates that additional treatment is necessary—or if the location, size, or type of skin cancer would be better treated with Mohs micrographic surgery or another specialized technique—an appropriate referral will be arranged.

Rene A. Valiente, MHS, PA-C is a nationally board certified Physician Associate specializing in medical, surgical, and aesthetic Dermatology. He has been practicing in South Florida since 2001 and brings over a decade of experience in Dermatology by diagnosing, managing, and treating a broad range of skin conditions.
Rene is skilled in the evaluation and treatment of common and complex dermatologic conditions; skilled at performing comprehensive full skin examinations for skin cancer screenings; managing chronic inflammatory diseases, and providing evidence-based medical therapies for patients twelve years and above.
In addition to medical dermatology, Rene has experience in aesthetic and cosmetic procedures, including neuromodulators, dermal fillers, Micro needling, RF Micro needling, PRP for hair loss and skin rejuvenation, laser rejuvenation, and other non-surgical skin enhancement. His approach is centered on natural, balanced results that enhance each patient’s features without appearing overdone.
